According to a new study published in the journal Nature, COVID changes the body′s response to other threats depending on the individual′s gender. In the study, the researchers from Yale University compared the immune responses of healthy people and people who experienced a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection but recovered after receiving the flu vaccine.
The study revealed that the immune systems of men who had recovered from mild cases of COVID-19 responded more robustly to flu vaccines than those of women or men who were never infected. The study′s findings revealed that men infected with SARS-CoV-2 had significantly altered baseline immune statuses. It showed that men were much more likely to die in comparison to women from an overactive immune response after a COVID infection.
As a result, the researchers concluded that mild cases of coronavirus infection triggered stronger inflammatory responses in men than women, which resulted in more pronounced functional changes to the male immune system even after recovery.
